Small Animal PET with MWPC (pdf)

While scintillation based detectors represent the vast majority of clinical PET scanners, a high resolution PET scanner for small animal applications based on Multi Wire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) technology has been developed at CERN many years ago. This technology offers higher resolution and competitive performance in terms of sensitivity compared to state of the art commercially available small animal PET scanners. Our research focuses on the improvement of the performance and the simplification of the manufacturing of these multiwire proportional chambers. The detectors offer sub millimeter spatial resolutions and can be built in almost arbitrary size. This talk will contain simulations for the sophisticated detector geometry and shows first tests using self-triggered readout electronics. This project is part of SFB 656 MoBil - Molecular Cardiovascular Imaging - From Mouse to Man - at the University of Münster.
