Multi-PMT optical module for deep ice detectors in Antarctica(pdf)

One goal of the PINGU project is to add denser instrumentation in the Deep Core subvolume of IceCube and to further decrease the energy threshold of the instrument to a few GeV. As an R&D activity targeted at potential future low energy as well as high energy extensions, a new type of optical modules will be tested in the PINGU framework. The multi-PMT DOM contains 41 three-inch PMTs in a cylindrical glass vessel. The design is based on the KM3NeT DOM. Among other advantages, this approach offers a significant increase of photocathode area per module and also per string length. The current status of the development and the prototype construction will be presented.
