Numerical calculation of blazar spectra. Application to 1 ES 1218+30.4 (pdf)

Observations of blazars with modern imaging air Cerenkov gamma ray telescopes like MAGIC - the actual largest imaging air Cerenkov telescope - detected gamma ray emission in the TeV energy range from several sources, e.g. the detection of VHE gamma rays from 1 ES 1218+30.4 (cf. Albert et al. 2006). One possible szenario to explain this very high energy emission provides the synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) modell. Interaction with the present magnetic field leads to synchrotron radation. The electrons scatter off these produced synchrotron photons and one yields a second, inverse compton, peak with a shape similar to the synchrotron peak, including photons of TeV energy. We developed a code, which solves the partial differential equation of the time evolution of the photon number density. The simulation yields an equilibrium solution representing the steady state spectrum of a jet.We here present the results for the application of the simulation to the BL Lac object 1 ES 1218+30.4.
